  Thiak smiled. “They are indeed. We can take them right in. Will you be using the spa with them?”

  Kori turned to her guests, and they both nodded. “Yes.”

  “Very good.”

  The attendants came and removed the bags that Nikada and Norod were carrying. “This way, please.”

  Their group headed into the hotel and up the wide lift to the VIP quarters. It was a wide suite that would suit the siblings very well.

  Kori waited in the entry hall while they got the tour of their rooms. “Would you care to head to the spa or to one of the restaurants for some refreshment?”

  Norod stretched lightly. “I wouldn’t mind a trip to the spa.”

  “I can arrange some tea and snacks there as well. Nikada, are you up for a massage?”

  Nikada grinned, her teeth gleaming. “Just point me in the right direction.”

  They trooped out of the suite and down to the spa floor. The attendants were helpful and asked, “Would you like to get a massage in the same room or privately?”

  Nikada grinned, “Private for me, please.”

  Norod looked down at Kori, “I don’t mind sharing.”

  Kori swallowed. “Couples massage for us then.”

  They were taken in, and Nikada floated along behind a very attractive young man with his face masked.

  Norod removed his clothing and Kori distracted herself by climbing onto the bed and lying face down before she banished her Masuo to her ankle. Norod looked even better than he had six months earlier. She didn’t know precisely how she could be sure, but it looked like he had been working out.

  She looked at him and concentrated on relaxing her muscles. “I document the negotiations between the other races and the Freyalki. Once their requests for seeds or plants have been registered, the Host and Bride come up to the station and I then document the details of the meetings until they are concluded and, finally, I file the agreements with the imperium and the other governments.”

  “You are enjoying that?”

  “It is work. I have hobbies here as well. It has been a long time since I was able to have something to do with my hands.”

  His claws extended and retracted again.

  Wen asked her to turn over. She rolled to her back, and he arranged her braid for her before he oiled up his hands and started on her shoulders.

  She groaned again and heard a snarl from the other table. Her pectoral muscles got their rubdown, and she lifted her arms over her head so he could get full access to her side and ribs.   The green vines, plants and ripe fields were soothing to look at. Freyalki porn was on the green and growing side.

  With the Masuo, she could have dressed herself with a thought, but she wanted to see where he was going with this. “I have an assignment that will take me away from here in two days.”

  “If you didn’t, would you come with me?” He nuzzled at her temple, inhaling deeply.

  She blinked, “Did you dream?”

  Nikada was reclining on the benches. “You didn’t tell her yet?”

  Norod growled at his sister. “No.”

  “Ah, dear Kori, we are your new employers.”

  Kori hung up her robe and she sat on the bench nearest the heat source. Her Masuo was providing her minimal covering in the shape of two bands that covered her breasts and hips, joined by small bands on the side.

  Kori looked over at Norod and he sat next to her, taking her hand in his. “I meant to tell you before we met up with Nikada again.”

  “It’s fine. Any work is fine with me.” She patted Norod’s hand. “I did think it was odd that no one would tell me where I was going.”

  He smiled in relief.

  “I still have one assignment tomorrow, so you and Nikada will be on your own.”

  “That will be fine. We will see what we can of the station, and we need to attend to business matters.” He slipped his arm around her.

  Nikada looked over at them and grinned. “Oh, good, you got that settled at least. I thought I smelled a lot of musk in the air, but I wasn’t sure it wasn’t soaked into the wood.”

  “So, when do I have to begin my duties?”

  Nikada smiled, “You can only work for the Ru family if you are a Ru, so that is the reason for the secrecy. You will be given Wyencar social standing the moment that you and Norod sign the documents that will bind you.”

  “So, no job unless I marry him?”

  Norod nodded. “If marry means mate, then yes. Consider it a contract requirement.”

  Kori was still wrapped in the buzz of her release and all the endorphins it generated. “Fine. Just tell me when and where. How long do mating contracts on Wyencar last?”

  Norod stiffened. “For life. Why? Did you think this was a temporary thing?”

  Kori landed in reality with a thud. “But, what if you get tired of me?”

  Nikada stretched. “Men can’t instigate divorce on Wyencar. It has to be the woman and her reasoning has to be good. Boredom isn’t a reason to part a union.”

  Kori blinked sweat out of her eyes. “Is there a way to get the whole story without having to ask the questions in snippets?”

  Nikada outlined the basics. Kori would arrive on Wyencar Prime as the mate of Norod Ru. They would meet with all members of the family and they would have the right to challenge Norod on his choice. After that was cleared, they would sign the documents in front of the rest of the Ru family and retire to Norod’s private retreat for the requisite month of privacy.

  When they returned to the capital of Prime, she could begin her duties as archivist, recording the history, agreements and trade concessions of the Ru family.

  “So, an interrogation, more confinement and I get rewarded with work?” Kori grinned. “Done.”

  Norod’s claws pricked her skin again. “Just like that?”

  “Just like what? We had one night six months ago and today, we fell together like there was no time between us. Even I am not that stupid. I can take a hint when fate is kicking me in the head.”

  He sighed happily and pulled her into his lap, kissing her wildly. She wove her hands through his hair and hung on as his rough tongue scraped the inside of her mouth and she began to imagine how it would feel elsewhere.

  “Wow. You two spark together like fella-flies. I am amazed you were able to distract yourself by working out, Norod. If I had been you, I would have gone insane.”

  Norod lifted his head and sighed. “I am guessing that I should have waited until we were private for this.”

  Kori stroked his cheeks, neck and shoulders. “I don’t think you could have, do you?”

  He grinned. “Probably not.”

  She sighed and leaned against him, looking over at Nikada. “How will you like having me for a sister?”

  Nikada grinned. “Coming here was my idea, so what do you think?”

  “Fine, but I am still not having sex with you.”

  “You are no fun. Not even once in celebration?”

  “No. You are an excellent friend, but I am not seeking pleasure with you.”

  Norod tightened his grip on her. “No, she is not seeking pleasure with you, sister.”

  “Fine. It was worth a final try before we return home. Once there, she will be under scrutiny. Do you have all the tests and documents ready, brother?”

  Norod nodded. “I have it all.”

  Kori sat up. “What?”

  Nikada smirked. “He has to prove that you are capable of bearing a daughter for the Ru family. If you are not a compatible species, there would be issues.”

  Kori froze. “But I am not compatible with the Wyencar. I looked into it after I arrived here. I would need gene therapy to make it possible.”

  Norod sighed, “Which is why we are making a stop at a medical station. It is on our way back to the planet, and the treatment you need is non-invasive and will take only a few days. The largest difficulty is body chemistry.”

  Kori sighed, “You see, this is what I meant by my not getting information in bits. So, after the treatment, I will only be able to have a child with a Wyencar, if at all.”

  “That is correct. Is that a problem?” His arms tightened as if to stop her from bolting.

  “No, but it means you really have to be serious about this. I am out here with no home, no family, no nothing. You are the one with something to lose here.”

  “I have nothing to lose and a new world to gain.” He grinned and nuzzled her cheek again.

  She smiled and kept a hand on his neck, feeling the heavy thudding of his pulse against her palm.

  After an hour of the sauna, they jumped into the cold pool and emerged for hot tea and iced fruit provided by the hotel spa staff.

  Relaxed, refreshed and energized, she led them back to their rooms and shifted her suit into an evening gown. Dinner was next on the agenda, and after that, Kori was going to have to return to her quarters. She had to work in the morning.

  Kori sat and typed while she paid close attention to the argument occurring in front of her. The Nyal characters were difficult to learn, but typing in Nyal was a skill that she could be proud of.

  When the argument was over, the meeting was adjourned for the day. It would commence again the following morning.

  The moment the Lith were out the door, Honour smiled. “So, your contract is up.”

  “Yup. I am out of here in two days. My ride has already arrived.”

  Honour chuckled. “You look like a woman in love.”

  “Call it post-coital glow. I don’t know about love yet.”

  “Will you and your intended
meet us for dinner?”

  “I have two guests.”

  “Both of them then. Please, dinner in an hour.”

  “I will see if they are available. Restaurant or hotel?”

  “Restaurant. Annabella is very excited to have made a trip to the station. She is growing at quite the rate.”

  “I look forward to seeing her, Honour. See you in an hour.” Kori filed the paperwork as incomplete and headed for the hotel.

  She knocked on the door and Norod answered, kissing her passionately before allowing her in.

  “We have all been invited to dinner with the Host, Bride and their daughter. In one hour. If you do not wish to attend, I can send your regrets.”

  Nikada looked up from her files and data pads. She snorted. “Like I am going to pass up that chance. Give me five minutes.”

  Norod laughed. “I am already dressed. If you didn’t ask us out, I was going to ask you.”

  She changed into a cocktail dress in Yalki tradition. Honour was stuck in her bio-suit and dressing up too much would be impolite.

  Norod invited her in and sat next to her on the couch. “How was work?”

  “Busy, unresolved.”

  “I do hate working with negotiations, and you do it constantly. How do you manage?”

  She smiled, “Easy, all I am concerned with is the proper recording of events. How the information falls is none of my business.”

  “It must be taxing.”

  “Only physically, and I get a bit of shoulder tension now and then. That is why Wen was so familiar with me. He has seen me every week since I got here.”

  “You won’t see him again.” It was an order.

  She shrugged, “Fine, but you will have to step in and keep my shoulders relaxed.”

  He grinned. “Turn around and I will see what I can do.”

  She turned sideways on the couch and he started to work her shoulders. She groaned, moaned and sighed as the tension was worked out of her body. When he worked down to her hands and massaged her fingers, she purred with delight. The noise made him pause. “Where did you learn that?”

  “I heard it on the dance floor on Wyencar Prime.” She chuckled and wiggled his fingers for him to continue.
