  She nodded. “Right. Bring me a sheet and a knife. I can make something.”

  “So, Cleo. Are you ready to actually be on Lrrko and make it your home?”

  She shrugged as she finished her tea. “At this point, yes. I will take it. I am ready to get some stability under me.”

  “I am fairly stable.”

  Cleo smirked. “How long do we have until we get to Lrrko?”

  “Long enough for you to try and get something stable under you.” He wagged his eyebrows.

  “Hands tied or behind your head?”

  “You choose.”

  She looked at the breakfast dishes. “Do we have to wait an hour?”

  “No. This isn’t swimming.”

  She grinned and led the way past the bedroom and through the ship to the firin
g range. She smirked.

  Helbri gritted his teeth as he held her. “It is definitely necessary. I would urge precise speed. She has lost her patience.”

  The rest of the harvest was over within a minute.

  Cleo lay back and panted as the medic escaped.

  “There, there. It is over now.”

  She was bristling with indignation. “I just had my crotch stabbed, and there was no foreplay involved.”

  Helbri looked like he was trying not to laugh. “I am aware.”

  She pulled her knees together and sat up slowly. “What is next?”

  “Meeting the Elders. They have been eager to meet you.”

  “Anything to do with my escape?”

  “Probably.” He smiled grimly.

  “Can they take you away from me?”

  “Never. We have a bond that goes far beyond assignments.”

  She blushed. “You say the sweetest things.”

  He snorted, and they waited to find out if her eggs were viable.

  It was a tense five minutes, but eventually, a relieved Alveck returned and inclined his head. “Ten eggs. Excellently done.”

  Cleo snorted. “Thanks; I worked hard on them.”

  Alveck looked confused, but Helbri snapped his fingers. “Is she free to go?”

  “I have to do one scan to make sure that there is no damage from the extraction, but after that, she is free to go.”

  Helbri held her hand during the exam, and the moment it was over, he winked. “I have a surprise for you.”

  He disappeared for a moment, leaving the room. Her instinct was to keep scanning it, because she had seen his camouflage ability on the ship. Naked hide and seek was now one of her favourite games.

  He came back in wearing a tight blue shirt and black pants that hugged all of her favourite landscape. In his hands, he held clothing in similar colours and a pair of knee-high boots draped on top.

  She dropped the sheet she was wearing and reached eagerly for the clothing.

  Alveck stared, swallowed and excused himself.

  Cleo looked down and smiled at the bite pattern across her breasts. “I think this scared him.”

  Helbri smiled, and she could see the memory of the previous day in his eyes. “It was a request I was glad to honour.”

  “It was fun. I don’t know how many times I will make that request, but I enjoyed it.” She took the shirt and pulled it on over the offending marks.

  He ran his fingers over her cheek. “I am glad. Now, the Elder Council is waiting.”

  “I know, I know. Time to get my butt chewed.”

  He winked. “Put it on the wish list.”

  She laughed and finished getting dressed, wiggling her toes in her boots and smiling.

  She walked at Helbri’s side to the roof, and she settled on the riot runner with ease. She glanced over her shoulder. “Do you want me to drive?”

  He shuddered. “No. While you managed to make it to the airbase, having seen the video of your journey, I am amazed you made it in one piece. I will drive until you have a chance to take proper instruction.”

  “Fine, but the instruction had better come soon. Flying these things is fun.”

  He sighed, and it was nearly enough to part her hair. With a few easy movements, he got them up in the air, and they were soon gliding across the city to a larger building that had much more security than the med centre.

  Cleo cocked her head. “Is there one of my people in that building?”

  “There is. Elder Lynni is taking up the protection and management of the Brides and working on the status of women on Lrrko in general.”

  “Okay. Good.” She had read the Bride contract, but she hadn’t signed it.

  Helbri was carrying the tablet, and they had agreed that she would need witnesses when she did finally sign it, so it would be in front of the Elders.

  They landed on the roof under the watchful gazes of four guards who collected their retinal scans. When they were authorized, they entered the building and headed down to the council chambers.

  Outside the chamber, Helbri handed her the tablet, and she brought up the contract.

  When it was ready, they walked into the council chamber, and the guards closed the door after them.

  The sole woman at the council had to be Terran, but Cleo had never seen a Terran like that. The colouration on one side of her body was hot pink and the other side was a pearly white.

  Shaking herself free of the distraction, Cleo signed the Bride contract before anyone said anything.

  She nodded to Helbri, and he took the tablet back, sending the document to the Lrrko archives.

  Elder Lynni smiled and leaned forward. “It has been delayed, but may I say, welcome to Lrrko, Cleo.”

  “Thank you, Elder Lynni. It has been an odd journey.”

  The other Elders looked irritated, but Lynni was amused.

  “I have been asked to tell you that the Elder Council wants you up on charges for disregarding your safety and endangering a generation of your offspring.”

  Cleo cocked her head. “What would that entail?”

  “House arrest for six months.”

  “No. That won’t be possible. I want to go exploring.” She smiled brightly.

  One of the Elders slid a tablet over to Lynni. She glanced at it and started reading the charges.

  Helbri cleared his throat and asked, “May I address the council?”

  The men looked to each other, and Lynni waved her hand. “Go for it.”

  “The list of infractions is indeed grave, if Cleo was a Lrrko citizen and registered Bride when she committed them. However, she was not a volunteer; she was kidnapped. Nothing that has been done to her was by her will, and no one in this room will fault a prisoner for trying to escape.”

  One of the male Elders blinked. “In that case, we shall charge her as an escaped slave.”

  Helbri inclined his head. “That would be possible, but she is now a citizen of Lrrko. She signed the Bride contract when she entered this room and nothing that happened before is admissible in disciplinary hearings.”

  Lynni was chuckling. She clapped her hands slowly. “Well played.”

  Helbri shifted close to Cleo and put his hand on her spine. The worst was over.

  Helbri proved her wrong. “Cleo will not be able to be separated from me, so there must be an alteration in our particular contract. If I am sent on assignment, she will go with me.”

  The council erupted into an uproar. Cleo and Helbri watched the others argue while Lynni looked at them closely.

  Finally, Lynni clapped her hands together. “As you
fall under my purview, I will state that if you produce fifty healthy eggs, you are free to travel with Helbri on assignment. If you are not with him during the initial period, you will be fostered to another Bride and Familiar for safety.”

  The Elders stared at Lynni. The man nearest her muttered, “You overstep your bounds.”

  A monitor flared to life, and another male Lrrko was featured there. “I have to agree with Elder Lynni. Her solution covers the issues. Bride Cleo cannot be stored like an unused weapon. She has a right to her freedom and that is what needs to be addressed. Also, take into account the rare nature of Helbri himself. If her eggs can provide the stabilization that his kind needs, the shadows may see a resurgence in our population. We all know that they are an asset.”

  The other Elders murmured together, but Lynni smiled. “Thank you, Elder Hrakin. That is my view of the situation as well.”

  “Excellent, Lynni. In that case, I reiterate our choice of Helbri as her Familiar and wish them an enjoyable rest in the Bride quarters. They have had a long journey. They must be exhausted.”

  Cleo took the hint and leaned toward Helbri. His hand kept her upright, but she could feel his amusement.

  Helbri cleared his throat. “Alveck has harvested ten eggs from her already. We went straight to medical before coming here. She has had them extracted, and you are aware of how taxing that can be.”

  Lynni sat with amusement while the other Elders murmured in concern.

  “Familiar Helbri, take your Bride to her quarters and make sure she rests. We know where to find you if we have any other questions.”

  Elder Hrakin spoke from the monitor. “Get some rest and enjoy the training facilities. I am guessing that several of the ranges and equipment would help work off some of the stress of your recent adventures.”

  Cleo knew a dismissal when she heard one. Helbri escorted her out of the room, and then, he whispered, “Do you want to see the gestation tanks?”

  “Yes.”

  “Come with me.” He took her hand, and they walked to the lift, entering and going down three floors. “Here we are.”

  She chuckled at his eagerness. “You don’t come here much?”
