  She was working with her ubiquitous cup of coffee when there was a knock at her door. Jen opened the door to see Oory standing there. “Oh. Good morning. Can I offer some coffee? I seem to have found out where everything got put.”

  “Um, yes, please.”

  Jen walked into her home and led Oory to the kitchen, where she got a large cup that she saved for larger species, and filled it with coffee. “What do you take in it?”

  “Cream and sugar. I can fix it.”

  Oory got her coffee the way she liked it, and she sat at the table next to Jen. “You look... different.”

  Jen snickered. “When I am not moving, I have a surprisingly girly manner of presenting myself. Working around the house, it doesn’t have to be fancy, just comfortable.”

  “What the hell are you doing with Day-ek?”

  Jen paused and chuckled. “Oh, you are a clan envoy this morning.”

  “Not formally. I am just a concerned member of family. Day-ek doesn’t have many relationships, and your situation is complex.”

  Jen sipped her coffee. “I know. The interesting part is, he knows. He knows all of it. If he was going to put himself in the line of fire, I was going to make sure he knew what was aiming at him.”

  “You are hiding behind him?”

  Jen snorted. “No. I am trying to find my nephew a clan before he becomes an adult and is under the grip of that bastard. I have offered my skills to the speaker, but he had a different idea, and because of the delay in that, Corit is now in the crosshairs.”

  “So, Day-ek is acting on his own?”

  Jen sipped. “I want him, he wants me, and he is coming around to the idea of sharing me with his teammates.”

  Oory spluttered. “What?”

  “I haven’t had a proper relationship before, but Day-ek woke me, and now, there is a roaring hunger that I doubt he will be able to sate. I mean, I am sure he will try until I can hardly walk, but then, the hunger will rise again. Dark fae hunger. Way stronger than wussy light fey urges.”

  “Dark... oh.” Oory thought about it. She grinned slowly. “That is a different matter entirely. You have power?”

  “Lots of it. I am a mix of orc, dark fae, and human. Elemental and seer. Aside from my hunger, I pack a lot of power. I would have killed that bastard if it wouldn’t have gotten Corit a lot of trouble.” It felt good to get it off her chest to the largest gossip in the region.

  “So, you have had the care of your nephew for years?”

  “Since he was eleven. His parents died on vacation. Boat sank in a storm, bodies washed up. He was with me for the weekend, and I had to go identify the bodies. The clan leader tried to take us in, but I stated that as custodial female, I had the right to choose a place I felt comfortable, and I took him, and I left.”

  Oory frowned. “You think your clan leader had something to do with it?”

  Jen leaned forward. “I spoke with the elemental who took money to cause the storm. I know the clan leader had something to do with it. He wanted us both under his fist.”

  Oory exhaled. “He... and you... what did you do to the elemental?”

  Jen chuckled. “We had a nice chat.”

  “Can you get them to testify or sign a statement?”

  “To committing murder? No. If they find their way out of their storm, they will have some soul searching to do. I mean, if they can find their soul.”

  “You...”

  “Locked them in their own storm. Nothing illegal. Just something I am allowed to do as the elemental of this generation. It pisses the mages off something fierce that all this power ended up in an extranatural.”

  Oory laughed and finished her coffee. “Well, I have to go. Just one more thing. You didn’t take out the clan leader because...”

  “The blood call. I didn’t want my friends and family to have to stand up to my defending myself and Corit. They didn’t deserve that.”

  Oory grinned and winked. “Thank you. Nice chat. Bone him ‘til it falls off.”

  Oory clapped her on the shoulder, and Jen laughed. The mug was set down, and the orc left the house. It still wasn’t eight in the morning.

  Jen was sitting on her porch when the SUV rolled into Day-ek’s drive. She was wrapped in a shawl and had her laptop balanced on her knees. She glanced up, and Day-ek stumbled out, and Jennor got to his normal height and helped him to the door. Jen closed her laptop and walked over.

  “Did something happen?”

  Jennor snorted. “The idiot got hit by a giant’s fist. He has a concussion. He’s a fast healer, though.”

  Reymark stepped out of the car. “That is a very thin dress, miss.”

  She snorted and looked to Jennor. “Get him inside, and I can heal him, though he won’t be up for much for the rest of the day.”

  Jennor got the door open and snorted. “I can’t get into his house like this.”

  “You promise not to tell anyone I did this?”

  His eyes gleamed. “Sure.”

  She picked up Day-ek and carried him into the house. His home was neat, tidy, and had quite a few masculine aspects but also had lovely art on the walls.

  She set him on the floor of his living room, and she set his head on her lap.

  Reymark came in, curious.

  Day-ek chuckled. “I am fine, just a little weak.”

  “I am about to fix both of those.” She held her hands to either side of his temples, and she whispered to his body, encouraging it to heal, and when it told her where the problems were, she gave them the power to fix things. That is where he became less than fine.

  He bellowed in pain as she lit him up for twenty seconds, and then, he slumped to the ground, exhausted but whole.

  He flexed his hands. “That sucked, but thank you.”

  She chuckled and stroked his head. “Up you get. And stop picking fights with boys bigger than you.”

  He paused and looked at her in astonishment before he laughed. “Used to fixing up Corit, are you?”

  She wrinkled her nose at him. “Get some rest. We can play another day.”

  He grabbed her wrist when she went to move his head and pulled her down on top of him, his lips brushing hers sweetly and then with heat.   He licked his muzzle, and she looked to Day-ek. “Do you mind?”

  “I came home with a concussion. This morning is already better than I thought.”

  Jennor made a plaintive whining sound. She snorted and stood up on wobbling legs. “That sound will only get you what you want for so long, and then, I start smacking your head and putting graffiti on your horns.”

  He chuckled. “I can deal with that. Dress off, please.”

  She snorted and shoved the dress off her hips. A round of gasps filled the room. And she muttered, “Get over it. It isn’t going to change.”

  Jennor positioned her on his lap with his bent knees acting as a back rest. When she was settled, she had an idea of what was about to happen but having her hips jacked skyward and his tongue licking at her from her rear entrance to her clit was a surprise.

  She blushed. “High praise considering that I didn’t do anything.”

  “You said we could, so we did.” Day-ek chuckled. “Great way to end a brutal shift.”

  She nodded. “Right. You guys have had quite the evening, so you need to get some rest, and I should go for groceries and check on the last round of edits from my editor.”

  Jennor murmured, “You need to come to my house so I can actually stand up.”

  She chuckled. “No. Not today.”

  Reymark laughed. “Probably a good idea. It’s almost rutting season for him, and he needs the practice.”

  She sighed. “Well, it is orc rutting season right now.”

  Day-ek grinned. “It is?”

  “Well, it’s a weekday.”

  He laughed. “All I am up for is a cuddle today, so if you need more, ask them. You don’t know how much that hurt to say.”

  She blushed and bit her lip. “I can wait. Maybe. If not, I will just have to wait until you guys are on shift and cause a disturbance. Lights, sirens... cuffs.”

  She got the information and nodded. “Right. Shall I meet the team there?”

  She cleared her throat. “I will be ready in eight minutes. Right.”

  She snapped her fingers, and her dress was in place. “I have to go on a consult. Sorry to cut playtime short, but duty calls.”

  Another snap of her fingers, and she was home. Time for work.

  Chapter Eight

  The shower was short but necessary. She was covered in the scent of the guys. She used a flick of magic to dry her hair, got into a skirt, blouse, and blazer then had to undress and put underwear on sensitive skin.

  She was dressed with her credentials on her when she left her house to go to the XIA vehicle parked in her drive. She saw the guys in the SUV chuckling, and when she turned her head, she nearly dissolved into a puddle. All three of them were standing on the porch, shirtless, vestless, with their pants held in place by friction.

  Just like that, she was aroused again, and when the door opened for her, she slid inside with the three men from the day shift looking at her speculatively.

  She muttered, “I will kill them, obliterate all traces of them, and then turn that house into an office.”

  The team she was with introduced themselves with chortles and grins. Yish, Flynn, and Jones were not her type. They were far too wary of shadows.

  Yish, the elf, smiled. “We are investigating the finding of a few bones. Not enough to hold a soul, so we want to know how the bones arrived and where they came from. You are supposed to be faster than the labs.”

  She nodded. “I am. I can tell you how it was handled, right up to the point where it lost life. From there, you need to work with a spectral or soul investigator.”

  Jones nodded from behind the steering wheel. “Cool.”

  “They mentioned you being available this morning during the briefing. We felt we could use you on this particular finding, though I fear we are taking you away from Day-ek’s team.” Flynn snickered.

  “Uh, the shirtless thing was for your benefit. When I last saw them, they were all very horny but completely dressed.”

  Yish laughed. “I am guessing they were trying to show you what you were missing.”

  She pressed a finger to her forehead, and it was her favourite finger. “Yeah, I got that idea. I didn’t even know that you could see Reymark’s muscles in daylight. I mean, I know you can feel them, but he was showing off for you guys.”

  Yish shrugged. “Wasn’t for me. Flynn?”

  “Nope. I see that in the locker room. Doesn’t do much.”

  Jones snorted. “I am dead. Wasn’t for me.”

  “Then, they must just have been getting some sun.” She shrugged.

  The car occupants chuckled, and she knew it was directed at her. Flynn glanced at her with weirdly gold eyes. His white hair and sharp nose pointed to bird shifter. “She smelled hot when she got in the car, but it has cooled some. Not flattering to us but going to be a lot of fun to taunt Day-ek with.”

  They were still laughing when they got to the site.

  She had her lanyard around her neck and credentials front and centre when she got out of the vehicle. There was a forensics team standing by and waiting for her to say whether they needed to spring into action or not.

  She smiled at the team and introduced herself. They showed her the item of concern, and she asked, “Do you have alcohol wipes?”

  They nodded, and she cleaned her hands. “I regret the contact, but it is necessary.”

  She cleaned off, used the forceps, and picked up the bone. “You can’t tell me that a shifter couldn’t determine that this was human.”

  The investigator snorted. “Of course, but is it shifter, mage, human, or otherwise?”

  “Oh. That. Right.”

  She nodded and closed her eyes as she dropped the bone into her hand.

  She whispered, “Follow me. She isn’t far.”

  She walked into the woods on the balls of her feet. A hundred and fifty feet later and she was standing over the body nestled in a bed of aromatic herbs. She bent and touched the leaves. “They were planted to hide the body.”
